Bishop's Quarter

The Bishop’s Quarter used to accomodate the high-ranking guests of the Our Lady’s Hospital, just across from here. The building consisted of a grand reception area on the ground floor and two spacious (bed)rooms on the first floor. Oh, to be a fly on the wall!

Built in 1622-23 by engineer Simon de Paepe I, this place is a remarkable example of Flemish Renaissance. Unfortunately, de Paepe couldn't bask in the glory of his accomplishment for long. In 1636, he died of the plague.

In 1910, the Bishop's Quarter was thoroughly renovated.
